If you live in Canada, you know the core cultural significance of ice hockey and the inherent popularity of the sport. But there are plenty of other opportunities to enjoy elite competitions in other sports over the coming months.
Since there are way too many sporting events to keep track of, we will help by providing a short list of the most notable ones that happened this year that you really don’t want to miss next time around.
A List of Top Canada Sports Events
April 29: Canadian Football League Draft
For Canadian football fans, the CFL draft marks an opportunity for improvement of their favourite teams. This is why this event is so eagerly followed, even if there is no actual football played. The draft is a window into the future of the league, and the first chance to get a good look at the professional players who might one day turn into top stars.
May 3-4: Quebec City Marathon
This race has been held annually since 1998 and features thousands of runners in several events. The course connects the town of Levis with Quebec City, and runs through scenic countryside along the banks of the St. Lawrence River. The prize fund for this event is relatively small, but that won’t stop scores of high-level runners from participating in their effort to win.
May 24-25: Ottawa Race Weekend
Over two days in May, Ottawa will become the meeting place for runners from all over Canada and beyond. The event consists of multiple races, with the Ottawa Marathon headlining the lineup. Around 40,000 participants are expected this year, giving this athletic summit a massive footprint. Some of the proceeds will go to charity, so the event really transcends athletic competition.
July 30: Royal St. John’s Regatta
This famous event has a long history that goes back at least to 1816, and it remains one of the premier nautical races in North America. The Royal St. John’s Regatta takes place every summer at Quidi Vidi Lake in Newfoundland and includes both a men’s and women’s competition. Up to 50,000 spectators are expected to show up and support the rowers, and being among them is a fascinating experience.
August 8-18: 2025 Games of Canada
With a biannual cycle that alternates between winter and summer games, this multi-sport competition is very diverse. This year’s edition occurs during the summertime and will include popular team sports such as basketball and rugby sevens (fast-paced versions of those sports), along with more exotic individual disciplines like fencing and canoeing. In other words, this extraordinary event has something for every taste.
August 22-24: CEBL Championship Weekend
This mini-tournament will conclude the 2025 season of the Canadian Elite Basketball League. Four teams will take part, but in the end one will stand alone as the next league champion. For the current year, the Winnipeg Sea Bears were chosen to act as hosts. In addition to quality basketball, the weekend will feature a rich cultural program focused on the promotion of the local community.
November 16: Grey Cup
For a good chunk of the Canadian population, the final match of the Canadian Football League is something like a national holiday. As well, it is the perfect opportunity for sportsbook betting in Canada and across the globe. That’s not too strange considering that the event has been around for more than 100 years. Provinces across Canada could see a spike in usership during the match. This year’s Grey Cup venue is the Princess Auto Stadium in Winnipeg, Manitoba, which has enough seats to accommodate around 32,000 visitors.
In conclusion, a true Canada sports events fan always looks to the next great event. Though the hockey season may be winding down, there are lots of events to see.
