In the Rim + Overload Combo drill, everyone jumps in on the play power play and penalty kill
Overview
In the Rim + Overload combo drill, everyone jumps in on the play power play and penalty kill. Another great hockey drill from the experts at Hockey Coach Vision.
Description
Players are divided into two teams. The Red team breaks out with a 5 on 3 and plays until a whistle. On the whistle, Coach chips a puck behind the offensive D, who retrieves it and rims it back in hard. All offensive forwards must touch up at the blue line to get back onside.
Next defender jumps in to create a 5 on 4. At the next whistle, Coach chips in another puck. The D player rims the puck as the last defender jumps in. The forwards clear and attack 5 on 5, as the next 3 Defenders move into the neutral zone.

Key Points of the Rim + Overload Combo Drill
- Emphasizes 5 on 3 and 5 on 4 play in a game-like situation
- The D rims high on the glass to prevent the goalie from cutting the rim
- All forwards must clear the zone together, touching up at the blue line before attacking again
- The Coach can spot a second puck for attackers for extended power play time, should the defenders quickly clear the puck
