The Find It-Hide It Hockey Drill

Hockey Coach Vision is back with another drill! This week we look at the Find It-Hide It hockey drill.

Overview

The Find It-Hide It hockey drill works on getting forwards driving to the net looking for puck deflections and net-front screening, as well as shot blocking by the forwards. The defense gets to work on getting shots through from the blue line. (This drills is part of their Norway U20 package.)

Description

Shoot for a stick on the first shot. Practice shooting to score with traffic, and drive for the rebound on the second shot. After the second puck/situation is complete, the pass comes from the corner to the defense and it’s a 2-on-2, where the defense become offensive players and forwards become defensive players.

The defense tries to score and put the puck on the net. The forwards try to block shots and pressure shots outside the net. The defense needs to keep moving and direct the puck to find lanes. They may also deke the forwards to gain the inside position to get shots on net and score. 

Make it a competition: Defense gets 2 points for each goal and 1 point for a shot on net. Forwards get 1 point for blocked shots or shots outside the net.

• Keep their stick on ice and head up
• Practice on being a good screen and drive for the rebound
• Keep their head up on the blue line to freeze the forward in the shooting lane
• Move their feet on the blue line to find a shooting lane
• Get open to receive pass on blue line
• Find the lane first to make the defense hesitate, then put pressure to take away their time and space
• Make sure they don’t get beat to the inside by the defense
