Hockey Coach Vision is back with the Breakout Basics 2v1 drill. Third in a 5-part series.

Overview

In the Breakout Basics 2v1 drill, the third installment of this instruction progression, one more forward is added to introduce timing and positioning between the center, winger and defense on the breakout. This is followed by a quick counter back into the zone on a 2v1.

Description

Defense (D) 1 steps up over the blue line, pivots backwards and retrieves the puck, skating hard behind the net. Forward (F) 1 and F2 must read D1 and move into a breakout position once D1 commits to wheeling with the puck, or cutting back behind the net. After making the breakout pass, F1 and F2 skate around the waiting players in the middle zone and come back in to play 2v1 against D1.

Key Points of the Breakout Basics 2v1 Drill

  • After passing, D1 should move up towards the blue line to set a tight gap on F1 and F2, trying to force the shot from outside
  • The goalie plays the shooter as D1 pushes them wide and takes away the cross-ice pass to the other forward
