The 1v1 Block-Out hockey drill, from the experts at Hockey Coach Vision
The 1v1 Block-Out hockey drill has players use their body position to protect the puck, then employ evasive moves to shake a D player in the corner.
Coach spots puck in the corner off of the wall. Forward 1 (F1) sets up beside the net, slightly ahead of Defense 1 (D1) and just off to the side.
On the whistle, F1’s first move is to step in front of D1 to prevent them from getting to the puck. F1 now skates hard to the corner to retrieve the puck, making one or two moves to evade the D before attacking the net under pressure from D1.
Key Points of the 1v1 Block-Out Hockey Drill
- Start with light pressure and then build to full one on one
- F should separate the D from the puck immediately, getting their body between the puck and the D
- Good puck protection technique that keeps players’ feet moving
